‘Chatterbox Gift Shop’ - History in the Name
The name of our Gift Store was not named after ‘Chatterbox
Falls’, on the Sunshine Coast as many people think. It is named
after a historic focal point of the Community that was the Chatterbox
Café. The café was originally built on the side of the Community
Gym and was run by Mavis and Len Bjorkman. ‘Juke boxes, french fries
and wonderful ice cream treats made the place a haven for teenagers in
the after-school hours after the school bus arrived, and for adults at
other times of the day.
In the early 70’s, when the mine started closing down, there was
a proposal put forth for a mine museum. Despite the success of the museum
project, the Beach community continued to shrink. Britannia’s dwindling
population could no longer support the Chatterbox, so on Sunday, August
27, 1972, the Chatterbox Café closed. The gift store was named
in this Café’s honor and somewhat recaptures the premise
that it was a meeting place as it also holds admissions and is an education
center all year long.
